“Mom! Mom! MOM!!!” I
called impatiently. I heard her sigh. “What?” She asked. “Melissa just called
and asked if I wanted to go to the corn maze with her. Can I go?” “Sure Abby,
go ahead” she said. Melissa has dark brown hair that goes a little past her
shoulders just like mine; we both have big black eyes, and love science. But
that’s about all we have in common.
We met at the maze 10 minutes later.
The maze was huge. We each got
slushies’ and started to walk along the trail toward the maze of corn. Soon the
giant stalks surrounded us. We turned left. Right. Dead end. Left. Left. Right.
I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around. Nobody there. I heard whispers. I
turned, again, no one there. “Did you hear that Melissa?” I asked. “Hear what”
she said. “Oh, never mind”. I said. Melissa
tripped over her shoelace. “ Maybe you should tie your shoe,” I suggested. “Okay” she said. “I’m going to go ahead. Just
run and catch up” I replied. I kept walking. 5 minutes passed and Melissa still
hadn’t caught up. “
Great, I thought to myself. There were
two paths in front of me left and right. Melissa’s
never going to know where I am now, I wonder if I should just wait here. I’ll
go back instead, I turned around and started walking. Something brushed my ankle. I glanced down. Nothing. The hot sun
beamed down on me. I slurped the last little bit of my slushy and stopped.
There was a dead end. The same one we had come to before but I would’ve found
Melissa by now if it were. I turned around. I still didn’t see Melissa though. Maybe I just didn’t see this dead end when I
walked by I thought. I kept walking from where I had come turned left.
Right. Right. At least I thought that was the way we came from. I turned right
again and ran into Melissa; well at least I thought it was Melissa. I mean it
was Melissa but she didn’t have a face!
